            Turning against terror      

Muslim support for suicide bombing is falling. The West should take advantage of this hopeful trend.

                      The sages teach that tragedy is instructive -- if its bitter lessons can be swallowed. Now a new poll finds that support for suicide bombings and other violence against civilians has plunged across the Muslim world, markedly, though not exclusively, in countries that have experienced such attacks. The data, released Tuesday by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, point out a clear path toward Western reconciliation with the estranged Islamic world -- if we're deft enough to take it.

Lebanon, at peace, braces for war

           The Middle East has no shortage of conflicts to worry the rest of the world: the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq , the nuclear ambitions of Iran , the stalemate between Israel and the Palestinians. And now, add an old trouble spot to that list: Lebanon .

On the one hand, Lebanon 's economy grew by a dizzying 9% last year, the strongest pace of any country in the region. Its feuding religious and political factions have joined in a power-sharing agreement that seems stable. And it's even selling itself, with some success, as a chic destination for European and American tourists.

But as I discovered on a visit to Beirut last month, the Lebanese are certain all this good fortune can't last. They're convinced -- not without reason -- that the confrontation between the U.S. and Iran will spill over into another war between Israel and Lebanon .

لبنان في حالة سلام , تستعد للحرب

إن الشرق الأوسط لا ينقصه أي نوع من الصراعات لإقلاق راحة باقي العالم: الحروب في أفغانستان و العراق و طموحات إيران النووية و الصراع ما بين إسرائيل و الفلسطينيين. و الآن نضيف مشكلة قديمة على القائمة: إنها لبنان.

 من ناحية, فإن الاقتصاد اللبناني قد نما بنسبة 9% السنة الماضية, وهذه الوتيرة تعتبر من أسرع ما حصل في دول المنطقة. إن طوائفه الدينية و السياسية قد اجتمعت ضمن اتفاقية تقاسم للسلطة تبدو مستقرة. كما أن لبنان تسوق نفسها وببعض النجاح كوجهة سياحية للأوروبيين و الأمريكان.

و لكن و كما اكشتفت من زيارتي إلى بيروت الشهر الماضي, فإن اللبنانيين متأكدون أن كل هذا الحظ السعيد لن يدوم طويلا. إنهم مقتنعون – و ليس دون سبب- بأن المواجهة ما بين الولايات المتحدة و إيران سوف تمتد إلى حرب أخرى ما بين إسرائيل ولبنان.

الموت البشع لصدام حسين

إن صدام حسين لا يستحق الشفقة من أحد. ولكن أي شخص رأى الصور التي صورت من الهواتف المحمولة يستطيع أن يميز أن إعدامه يحمل شبها في عدالة الدولة. ظهر الدكتاتور المدان و كأنه سلم من جيش الولايات المتحدة إلى يد العصابات الشيعية لتفتك به.

بالنسبة للإدارة الأمريكية, التي زعمت أنها ذهبت إلى العراق لزرع الديمقراطية والعدالة, فان هذه الصور التي نشرت عالمياً كانت محرجة ومخجلة بشكل معيب. و لسوء الحظ, فان جميع الأمريكيين سيلامون,  في الوقت الذي تستمر فيه معاناة الشعب العراقي. فما كان ينبغي أن يكون رمزا للعراقيين للخروج من عهد مظلم سوف يكون بدلا من ذلك موقدا لنيران حرب طائفية لا تنتهي. 

      The Ugly Death of Saddam Hussein

      Saddam Hussein deserves no one’s pity. But as anyone who has seen the graphic cellphone video of his hanging can testify, his execution bore little resemblance to dispassionate, state-administered justice. The condemned dictator appeared to have been delivered from United States military custody into the hands of a Shiite lynch mob.

For the American  administration, which insists it went to war in Iraq to implant democracy and justice, those globally viewed images were a shaming embarrassment. Unfortunately, all Americans will be blamed, while the Iraqi people are now likely to suffer still more. What should have been a symbol for Iraqis  -to passage out of  dark era will instead  be fuel for endless sectarian war.
